Book Jacket

Sam/Jack had grown up with Old Bill, his stepfather, telling him what a no-good, womanizing, selfish creep his father, James Keagan, was. Why, because Sam had Tourette’s syndrome and Bill can’t accept that from his adopted son. After graduation, Sam is befriended by George, an old friend of his dad. George calls Sam Jack, because that’s his original name. When George dies, Jack is sent on a cross country trip to Jerk, California. It gets complicated when Naomi decides to go with Jack. Along the way Jack tries to sort out who he is, learn who his father was, his feelings for Naomi, and just where he fits in. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Except for “Old Bill” all of the characters seem to learn and grow. But even “Old Bill” is believable. One of my favorite parts is when Naomi learns how to milk a cow.’ “They just yank on this thing and milk comes out.” She [Naomi] scowls at Mary. “But now they’re content giggling at me, aren’t you?”’ A nice summer read.
