So I decided to re-read The Thiefby listening to the audio version. And I must say it is very different then I remember it. I remember it as being this very mysterious book about a thief named Gen who gets captured after bragging about how great a thief he is. After he steals the Kings seal from the Magus he gets tossed into the prison only to be let out by the Magus in exchange for stealing something for him. What I forgot about the book is all the story telling within the story. Gen and the Magus tell the stories of their old Gods along the way to where the “treasure” is hidden. The book has three kingdoms in it: Sounis, Eddis, and Attolia. The story starts in Eddis with the prison of the King, then they are in Attolia (stealing something very vital to the plot), then it ends up in Eddis (which is in the middle of the other two. The Queen of Attolia is a very scary woman who rules her country with an iron fist. The Queen of Eddis is very kind and rules her country with a peaceful serenity, and the King of Sounis wants nothing more then to have a clear path at Attolia so he can conquer it (and if that means getting the Queen of Eddis to marry him then so be it.
There is a lot of misunderstandings in this book that make the plot twists all the more interesting. And what the other characters don’t know is that Gen has had a plan from the beginning and a big secret. So if he can survive the people in all the countries that are out to kill him and the hidden traps of the hiding place of the “treasure” then he may get to reveal his big secret.
So far there are 4 books in this series: The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, and A Conspiracy of Kings. The story, as you continue to the next books, takes a surprising turn. When I first read these books I read The Queen of Attolia first. I really like it so I went back and read the first one. If you like to be surprised at the end of the book then read this series. Megan Whalen Turner will never disappoint when it comes to surprising the reader, at least in my opinion.

I finished re-reading the 2nd book. The Queen of Attolia and have moved on to book 3, The King of Attolia. But Book 2 will always be my favorite. I read it first back when I was in college and it surprised me then and surprises me again now. The characterization in the books always make it seem like they are doing one thing for one reason, but the reader never knows the true reason until the very end. The author has a way of hiding what is happening and I love it. I’m midway through book 3 and though I know what happens I am still loving the fact that not everything is being said or shown in the book so none of the characters know whats really happening and neither does the reader. So Awesome!
